 Night shift. //OPEN!
« Thread Started on Feb 10, 2007, 7:04am »

Another night, another shift at the pub. Looking into the plain glass mirror in the girls' toilets a sigh left her lips as she pushed a few loose strands of hair behind her right ear. Her multi-coloured threads were pulled back in a rough ponytail, a few loose strands brushing against her skin. She had just gotten back from her cleaning shift at the hotel and truthfully was wiped out, but she couldn't go to bed. She had rent to earn as well as money to get the basic dietry needs. Her deep eyes took in the black halter top and black studded skin tight faded jeans she was wearing, with a pair of black heels on underneath. Well it was better then her hotel maid's uniform. Putting on the silver pin with her name on it she then left the toilets and walked behind the bar. Painting a smile on her lips she looked at the first customer, asking in a cheery tone that wasn't exactly sincere but she pulled it off to a t.

"Hello sir, what may I get you today?"

She asks with a smile. After working here for three months she was a pro at faking sincerity and joy, as truthfully working almost 24 hours a day 7 days a week was exahausting. She was lucky if she got time to sleep in on a Saturday which to her would be into nine. That was if she was lucky. Pulling out a glass from under the bar she poured the man a pint before placing it infront of him.

"That'll be two ninety please."

She asks with a smile holding out her hand as the man hands her a five dollar note. Taking it she walks over to the till and presses a few buttons before putting the note in the till and grabbing the man's change. Handing over his change she smiled politely before spotting a few men eyeing her up in the far corner. Rolling her eyes she walked out to the backroom and grabbed a box of crisps before walking back to the bar. Opening up the box she began to stack the crisps on the display shelf, making sure it was colour coded and neat before standing back to admire it. Smiling she nodded in satisfaction before picking up the box and walking out to the backroom where she put the box in the large wheely bin. Walking back out to the bar she spotted a new customer and walked over with a polite smile,

"Welcome to the Dog and Bone, how may I help you?"

Kenzie had decided she needed friends here around Ashford. She had moved here not too long ago, and had been homeschooled beforehand so she really didn't know very many people at all. Which was why she had thrown on that black halter, blue jeans and black sandals outfit she rarely wore. Her nails were painted, black like a sharpie and her hair was up as usual, a ponytail pinned to the back of her head, two strands falling into her face. She had chalked over her eyes in eyeliner, and swiped neutral gloss over her lips. Ready for a night out on the town, she grabbed her black purse and headed out to her car, to the Dog and Bone Pub.

When she got there, she slipped through the doors, biting her lips as she stared around. Maybe this wasn't the best place to find a new friend..? The thoughts left her, though, as she heard a voice behind her and she turned to see who it was. Obviously, a bartender or someone of the sort. ''Oh, hey there. I'm actually not in the mood for a drink right now, I'm new around here, I mostly came to look for people to befriend.'' Kenzie told the girl with a smile, her dark eyes big and sparkling. ''I'm Mackenzie, by the way, Mackenzie Lukas. You work here, right? What's your name?'' She was overfriendly at times, especially when meeting new people or when she was nervous. This was.. one of those times.

Watching the dressed up girl talk a small smile tugged at her lips. She could tell she was nervous, so Ashley would put on her bartender image and be friendly. After all, as a bartender she had confidence, and didn't feel like the usual shy keep-away-from-me-so-I-won't-get-hurt self. So truthfully this job was a god send. Plus, it was a lot more fun then being a maid or a pizza delivery person.

"The name's Ashley Henessey, but you can call me Ash."

She says with a smile as she leans on the bar, a small glimmer of herself flooding into her bartender image. Realising she was supposed to be working she stood up straight, pushing a few strands of hair behind her ear before smiling at Mackenzie.

"Its good to meet you Mackenzie. Do you fancy a snack or something? We have crisps as well as some hot and cold snacks."

She asks as she gestures to the simple looking menu on her left. It had everything they served in there and was the bible to Ashley when she had first worked here. It had taken ages for her to remember what they served, as well as the cocktail mixes. It was almost tempting to have a try of the drinks herself but she knew she'd never be able to hold it as she hadn't drank since she got out of college which to her seemed like decades ago.

Mackenzie made herself take a deep breath, and let herself close her eyes for a simple second before snapping them back open, feeling a bit more reassured and a teensy bit less nervous than just a few seconds before. First impressions were important, and well, she didn't want to mess them up. ''Nice to meet you too, Ash.'' Kenzie smiled, tucking one of the strands of hair hanging in her face behind her ear, her dark eyes scanning over the menu quickly. Crisps. Yummy. ''Okay, I do like crisps, can I have a box/bag ( ionno what they are? xD; ) of those, please?'' Mackenzie asked Ashley, closing the menu and looking up at her.

''Oh, and you can call me any shortened form of Mackenzie you want - some people hate saying the whole thing, so they shorten it to Mack or Kenz or something.'' The girl offered, thinking of that on the spot. Of course, Ashley had told her to call her Ash, so that could have triggered her saying so, but who really knew? ''Are you still in school here? Or have you graduated?'' Her desperate attempts at a conversation, but once she stated she had been homeschooled, that usually got something going. Or at least, she figured it would; she hadn't exactly tried that theory out lately.. recently.. okay, ever. But you needed somewhere to try things out, right?

{teensy post, sorry D:}

Ashley nodded with a smile as Mackenzie asked for a packet of crisps. Grabbing a bag from the display she put them infront of Mackenzie with a smile,

"Thats twenty five cents please."

She asks gently, letting her shields flicker close briefly before hearing Mackenzie talking again. Smiling as she asked her to call her a shortened version of Mackenzie Ashley grinned, her full self almost coming into view as she looked at Mackenzie with a playful grin.

"Okay, K, I just graduated about six months ago."

She said with a smile, her eyes sparkling as she called Mackenzie by a single letter; K. Just like from the film the Men In Black. That had been her favourite movie growing up, and Will Smith was just gorgeous. Realising she was showing a little too much of herself her shields flew up as she stood straight and put on a polite smile.

"How about you? Have you just moved here?"

She asked, a little curious about Mackenzie. She was too nervous to be an old face around here so she had to be someone new.

Tucker pushed the acceleration of his old truck down harder and he raced towards the Dog and Bone Pub. Why did he have to be late on his first night? It'd taken him forever to find somewhere to shower since he'd been cleaning a nasty hotel room earlier and smelt like drugs and beer. It wasn't that he'd been doing them, but he had been cleaning them up. He honestly wasn't making a good impression on his first full day here.

As he pulled up to the pub, Tucker came to a screeching halt and quickly hopped out of the truck, not even bothering to lock it. He jogged up to the door and slipped into the pub quickly, finding the bar immediately. Tucker quickly strode over and noticed that he matched nicely with everyone else in this pub. They all seemed to be wearing dark colors just like him. He had on a pair of dark blue jeans and a black and white volcom short. The perfect image of a skater boy.

"Sorry I'm late!"

Tucker noticed the other bartender was talking to some one, so he started taking the orders of the other people who were waiting on drinks. After the buzz at the bar died down, tucker sank down in a chair that sat behind the bar. The other bar tender was stilling talking to someone and he hadn't even seen her face yet. He wondered who she was, but he'd have to wait til she was done talking until he could actually see who it was.

Hearing someone say sorry they were late she guessed he was the new guy she was supposed to help settle in. She didn't mind him being late, after all it wasn't that busy yet. Looking at Mackenzie she smiled politely,

"Excuse me a minute, I have a late worker to yell at."

She says with a smile, although a hint of teasing dripped off her voice. Turning her hair danced on the breeze before hitting her soft skin again, her eyes turning from calm to shocked as she recognised the new guy. Tucker. She had met him earlier at the hotel. What a small world.

"Tucker?"

Now he had seen her at two of her three jobs. Well at least she looked a little better then the last one. That maid uniform was ugly. Seeing he had already taken down orders from people she began to help him get the drinks up. When they were all sorted and everyone was fine she let out a deep breath. She hadn't been able to have a nap between jobs today since the bus had broken down, so then she had tried to get a taxi back but they were running late and by the time she got back she only had thirty minutes to eat, get changed and back here. It was crazy.

Tucker wasn't very surprised as Ashley turned around, just because he'd been expecting to see her around somewhere since they both had never ending jobs. Although, he hadn't been expecting to see her this soon. It was just this morning that he'd helped her clean up a trashed hotel roomed that he'd been knocked out it. There seemed to be about a thousand jobs in this town and yet it seemed like everyone worked at the same places. It didn't bug Tucker though. Then he'd actually get to talk to some people instead of just working all the time.

"Ashley! How's it going?"

Tucker says enthusiastically. He was always like that. Wall, at least he was always like that when he wasn't knocked out of the floor with a black eye. Speaking of black eyes, his had died down a little from earlier, but it was still a light shade of purple. What a great way to make a splash in this new town. Looking like he got beat up and couldn't stick up for himself. He really wasn't that great in fights anyways because he was so skinny, but every once and a while he got lucky and could win. It wasn't that Tucker liked fights, but sometimes he would crack and joke and people just took them too seriously.

Realizing that the girl who Ashley had been talking to earlier was still at the bar, Tucker offered her a wave. She'd seemed like a nice girl while Ashley was talking to her and Tucker was just happy to get to know anyone and everyone in this small town. Tucker was all for fun and he couldn't have fun without friend.

"Hey! The name's Tucker."

Tucker could probably seem over friendly at times, but then again, he was over friendly.

Kenzie dipped into her purse and handed Ashley a dollar and took the bag. ''Don't worry, keep the change, it's only seventy five cents. Ashley's next statement made her laugh. K. ''Six months, eh? I graduated .. if you'd call it that, a year ago. I've been homeschooled.'' She said with a shrug. ''And as for that, I've only been here a few days, really. Had to leave the old town, it just didn't feel.. right there anymore.'' She attempted to explain then shrugged it off, and turned at the voice calling about being late. Another worker, eh? Then Ashley turned away to yell at the new worker and she laughed. ''Mmmkkk.'' So, she opened the bag of crisps and popped one in her mouth, watching Ashley talk to him. She seemed to know him.. small world, much?

It was about the time she had finished half the bag when the boy talked to her and she smiled lightly. ''Hello, Tucker. I'm Mackenzie, you can shorten it though..'' She smiled, her eyes wide and sparking with relief. He was nice, that was good, and so far she knew two people in Ashford. Maybe life here wouldn't be so bad, after all? Kenzie walked closer to the two employees and leaned on the counter, her near empty bag of crisps lying in front of her. ''How's it going?'' She asked Tucker, smiling still and watching the drinks being prepared. She could never do something like that, it would take someone who wasn't a klutz. And that she was.

Mackenzie. So she seemed like she was a pretty nice girl. Tucker just got lucky when he was meeting new people. Earlier he'd met Ashley, who was pretty cool and nice, and now he met Mackenzie and she seemed nice. He wondered if there was even a mean soul in this whole city. There had to be somewhere. No town was entirely perfect. People had their flaws.

Tucker's flaw was his lack of self control. He could never really stay serious in a serious time and he could never help from pulling a prank on someone. Now, most people liked that about him, but he'd known people who didn't like the fact. Like all the rich preppies at his boarding school. Talk about a boring bunch of people.

So, how exactly was it going for Tucker? Well, he was still living out of his truck. He was late for his first day of work. He'd gotten knocked out his first night here. Then, he'd helped clean up a disgusting hotel room. All in all, it was a pretty horrible first 24 hours here, but it didn't get Tucker down. He was quite the optimistic person.

"I'm pretty good, I guess. This town seems like a really nice place. How about you?"

A smile tugged at her lips as she noticed how much more enthusiastic and full of energy he was then earlier. A lot more friendly and playful if she had to actually pin point what it was. Well at least she knew someone else here at this job, and she wouldn't be completely bored. He seemed like a fun kind of guy, something that she could really use in her life. It had gotten so mundane and hard lately, she needed a little fun even if she was just watching it. Noticing his black eye was going down she smiled softly, remembering his story of how he got it. He may not be big and strong like most guys around here [they usually had huge egos to go with it] but he was still quite attractive now she looked at him more. Glancing over at Mackenzie a content smile crossed her lips as she watched her and Tucker talk. He seemed so much more energetic then he had this morning, unfortunately she wasn't any more energetic. Maybe a couple of hours around him would change that and she'd finally let her shields down, she however highly doubted anyone could get her to open up. No one had so far. Hearing a voice she turned to see another customer. Turning she walked to the opposite end of the bar, her mind drifting off Tucker and Mackenzie as she got back to her work image.

"Hey, welcome to the Dog and Bone, how may I help you?"

She asks gently. Upon hearing his order she pulled out a glass and mixed an alcoholic cocktail like a pro before handing it over a smile on her lips. Her mum had been a major alcohol conesseur [at least thats what she preffered to call it] so she knew how to mix cocktails as her mum was usually to drunk to make it herself. Her parents usually held huge parties, and before hand Ashley had to mix about sixty different cocktails for them before all the children was banished upstairs. Even upstairs with the music on full blast she could still hear them all having adult fun, and she guessed thats how her mother had got pregnant with her by that other man. She had found out her mother had an affair when her parents had been fighting after another drinking party, a great way to end your twelvth birthday party huh? Taking the money she gave back the customer his change before walking back to Tucker and Mackenzie, wondering what they were talking about now.

''You guess? That's not good; you should know.'' She said with a smile, watching Ashley out of the corner of her eye. Ash was definitely a good employee, sure, she had stopped to chat with Mackenzie a bit, but she had gone off to do what she had to without saying much but sorry and to exocuse herself. And Kenzie liked that about her. ''Me? Yeah, it's going good for me.'' She said with a smile, crunching up the bag of crisps she had just finished. ''Hey, I'm gonna go throw this away, I'll be right back.'' Kenz told him and turned, looking for a trashcan while biting her lip.

When she found one, she groaned and slid her way through the crowd, ignoring all the drunken comments and all the bastards that got in her way. Some people really didn't know when to quit drinking, did they? She scowled and tossed the bag into the trashcan and turned, pushing the men in front of her away back up to where she had left Tucker, hoping he was still there. But, even if he wasn't she could find him. He, after all, was one of the employees here, right?

[Ugh. I don't feel like doing my little icon thing anymore .. so I have decided to only do it in the first post of every thread Tucker's in. :P]

Tucker smiled to himself and made a mental note to always be sure about how he was around Kenzie now. He watched her as she walked off to throw her crisp's bag away, rolling his eyes at all the drunk men around her. They could be such pigs and now he'd have to be around them everyday. Not exactly his dream job, but at least it was bringing in some cash and he needed that badly. And of course he could hang out with Ashley, which was pretty cool too.

Tucker grabbed a rag from behind the counter and began wiping up a spilled beer that some totally wasted guy had knocked over. He had a feeling they might have to escort the man out if he got any more disruptive than he already was.

As Kenzie made her way back, Tucker finished cleaning up the mess and threw the disgusting rag into the trash can behind him. Leaning back on the counter like he had been earlier, Tucker shot Mackenzie a smile.

"So, are you new here?"
